Haji Mus Bin Yusof or better known as “Pak Lomak” was an important figure in the evolution and growth of the ghazal music of Johor. Author of authoritative guide on ghazal music of Johor, “Panduan Ghazal Melayu”, Pak Lomak was awarded the honorific title of ‘Pendeta Ghazal Johor’ (Johore Ghazal Scholar) in recognition of his knowledge and expertise on the subject of Johorean Family.
Pak Lomak was the son of the late Tuan Haji Yusoff and grandson of Dato’ Mohd Salleh Bin Perang (the Dato’ Bentara Luar Johor), the latter being the founder of Batu Pahat and Muar in Johor. While serving as colonel in the military corps, ‘Timbalan Setia Johor’ (JMF), Pak Lomak was particularly in develope and expanding ghazal music as an art form. Many of his ghazal compositions, particularly those written from 1923 to 1924 while serving in Mersing, remain popular until today.
Pak Lomak’s passion and enthusiasm for the advancement and promotion of ghazal was evident right up until his collapse and death while performing a ghazal demonstration to an American delegation conducting research on Malaya cultural art forms in Johor Bahru on 27 June 1960. in recognition of his achievements and contribution to ghazal, the state government initiated a national level competition for the ghazal music of Johor, known as “Pertandingan Ghazal Johor” in 1988, awarding the coveted title “Piala Pak Lomak” (Pak Lomak Trophy) annually to those deemed worthy recipients.
