Ramli M.S. has 26 professional experiences in the music industry. He has been involved in producing pop artistes, arranging, sessioning, backing both local and foreign, artistes and composing songs. He is the first sight-reader with the ability to arrange for pop, big band and orchestration.
In the first 4 years of his careers he experienced playing music in every imaginable from nightclub, Japanese Lounge, Dangdut Clubs, Discos, and Showclubs. This experience proved to be invaluable in learning in various styles of performance and songs arrangements.
He started out performing with Singaporean group Fantasy that was a popular club circuit showband in the mid to late 1970’s. Together with the band he performed in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. After the band ended their gig in Taiwan, Ramli decided to stay on to gain more playing experience. Having already attained knowledge of reading music he managed to secure a place in baking band that accompanied major artistes such as Fong Fei Fei, Koa Ling Fong, Lee Van Chen. He remained in Taiwan for 2 years performing and increasing his musical knowledge.
Ramli’s involvement in studio work in 1978, due to his increasingly busy schedule Ramli had to turn down a scholarship that was offered to him by prestigious Berklee College of Music, and since then he has been very involved in producing for both Malay and Chinese Artistes in the region. He has sessioned on more than 2,000 songs (bass, guitar, keyboards, and accordion) and he has involved in at least 250 album production.
Recognition of his talent has grown to such status that he has produced, arranged, sessioned, and musically directed at least 90% of local artistes amongst them being Anita Sarawak, Hetty Koes Endang, Sudirman, Awie, Ning Baizura, Ziana Zain, Slam, M. Nasir, and many others.
Apart from studio work Ramli is also founder and director for Rockafella a famous local performing band, that consist of the country’s top session players that has performed at Hard Rock. The band’s popularity genered the highest monthly sales in South East Asia for Hard Rock Café.
Amongst his industry achievement, are winning Best Musical Arrangement in a Song at Anugerah Industri Muzik 1999 (AIM ’99) and being a final nominee for the same category for the Anugerah Industri Muzik 2000 (AIM 2000).
In local music scene, Ramli has single handedly introduced the use of live strings in pop and rock arrangements as far back as 1984 with, conducting and arranging for number of recordings and live events. He is well known for his string arrangements in the region and has been requested for by such top artistes as Jacky Cheung and Ronald Cheng from Hong Kong. Apart from this, Ramli has worked with Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, Singapore Symphony Orchestra, DBKL Orchestra, RTM Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, and Osaka Symphony Orchestra.
Ramli was also musical director, conductor and arranger for Tan Sri S.M. Salim performance with Philharmonic Orchestra at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas in 2001.
His musical talent and his diverse musical knowledge have put him in the forefront or the local music industry.
